OtterBox Defender for iPhone 7 & 8 Review

OtterBox Defender for iPhone 7 & 8 Review

Powerful Protection

There is nothing subtle or delicate about the OtterBox Defender. It’s here to do one job, and one job only – to protect your iPhone from anything and everything your active lifestyle throws at it – and it’s going to do that job exceedingly well.

The Defender’s design incorporates multiple layers of protection. The inner polycarbonate shell locks together around your handset housing to prevent scratches and secures the in-built screen-protector. The outer synthetic rubber shell slips on over the top to provide protection against knocks and drops, as well as creating port covers for the lightning connector and rocker switch, and fully enclosing the remaining buttons. The polycarbonate holster adds a final layer, while the 360-degree-adjustable belt clip doubles as a hands-free kick stand. The end result is a case that might not be especially sleek or good looking, but will take just about anything you can throw at it, including the kitchen sink.

And OtterBox give that their best shot when it comes to product development and testing. Each design has to pass 238+ hours of testing across 24+ tasks before getting the green light to go into production. They even test for makeup and hand lotion resistance!

With modern iPhones being IP67 certified, some might argue that this kind of heavy duty protection is overkill (IP67 certification means a device may be submerged in water up to a meter deep for as long as 30 minutes). But waterproofing only works when your handset is utterly undamaged. If your lifestyle or work is the kind that puts your phone through the wringer, it won’t take long for a crack or a chip to form, eventually leaving it vulnerable to liquid and dust ingress. That’s where the Defender comes in.

Whilst the Defender won’t be winning a beauty pageant anytime soon, OtterBox have still made it available in some nice colour combinations, such as Purple Nebula and Borealis, in addition to plain old blacks and greys.

In summary, one of the strongest cases on the market, comparable only to the LifeProof Fre – 4/5 stars.
